Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is a series of protected marine sanctuaries that form a bay around 1 of the 3 living coral reefs in North America.
Tropical fish abound, with schools of grouper and jacks parading next to rays, eyes, and the occasional shark. Upon arriving in Cabo Pulmo, marvel at the landscape as the mountainous desert meets the brilliant turquoise sea. As you get geared up at Los Arbolitos beach, you’ll be informed of the park regulations and given an instructional kayak lesson. Paddle out to La Sirenita beach, a remote sea lion colony, before hopping into the water to begin snorkeling amidst plentiful aquatic life.

– is located about 35 miles from San José del Cabo in Baja California Sur. (23 miles north of the Los Cabos International Airport). You will cross the Tropic of Cancer at Km 81.5 on Highway 1. Turn at the Pemex station at Km 84. You will delight your eyes as you see the colorful agriculture farms and fruit orchards surrounded by thousands of majestic palm trees, which represent an important source of palm leaves for making palapa roofs throughout the Cape region. 

As we bypass the small plaza, there are the post and telegraph offices, a gas station, some stores, and a market selling local fruit and vegetables. 

The town was founded as “Misión de Santiago el Apóstol” in 1723 and the natives celebrate its patron saint day, the feast day of St. James, on the 25th of July. Santiago has a small rustic museum located next to the church with interesting exhibits such as colonial artifacts and local fossils.

While Los Cabos and the beaches that made it famous are enjoyed by many, there are other stretches of idyllic bliss in the Cape region, not far from the explorer’s reach. The East Cape Region extends from several miles east of San Jose del Cabo along the Sea of Cortez, to north of Punta Pescadero, Los Barriles and Rancho Buena Vista. All are names long popular with fly-in fishing diehards; but perhaps not so familiar to many others.
That’s changing as more people discover this region where quiet hideaway hotels coexist with new restaurants, supermarkets and private residential enclaves. Just an hour by paved Highway 1 from Los Cabos International Airport, the north end of the East Cape is attracting both devoted seasonal veterans and an increasing number of first time visitors.
Some say the East Cape hubs of Buena Vista and Los Barriles, magnificently situated on Bahia Las Palmas, are the Los Cabos of twenty years or thirty ago. Famous for its gamefish, Bahia Los Palmas stretches from Punta Pescadero south to Punta Arena Sur.
